Creepy crawly

Let's have some Halloween fun by making some crafts honoring the small creatures that hide in the dark corners and jump out to surprise us when we least expect it. After all, what is Halloween without little critters that creep, crawl and spook us all? Entry fee: $3. Date: Oct. 28. Ages and times: Session 1, 2-year-olds with an adult, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Session 2, 3- to 5-year-olds, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12.

Start Smart for preschoolers

Start Smart sports development program is designed to help children 3 to 5 years old and their parents prepare for organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. The program instructs parents and kids together on the proper technique for each of the basic motor skills (throwing, kicking, catching, and hitting) necessary for sports participation. In this fun mini-camp program, your child will learn the basic rules of soccer, T-ball and basketball in addition to learning to socialize with new friends. Key fundamentals will be taught through activities designed to introduce your child to each sport. Entry fee: $20. Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 27 to Nov. 26. Ages/times: 3-year-olds, 9:30 to 10 a.m.; 4- and 5-year-olds, 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 20. Instructor: Kyle Emerson.

Playtime

Join HRC and Head Start for a morning of social play. This class is designed for kids to participate in stories, art activities, songs and dancing, free play time, parental support and more. Group experience encourages children to interact with each other, explore, experiment, problem solve and create. At the end of the class, the children will have the opportunity to plan next month's theme. Parents are encouraged to attend and play with their child during this session. Entry fee: $5 per session Date: Thursdays to Sept. 24, Oct. 22, Nov. 19, Dec. 17, Jan. 21, Feb. 25, March 25, April 22. Time: 9:30 to 11 a.m. Ages: 3 to 5. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 10.

Waltz dancing

Put some rhythm in your step and learn your way around the dance floor during this class. Come join us and learn the basics of the English waltz. This is a great class for the beginner or someone who just needs a refresher class. Entry fee: $20 per couple. Date: Fridays to Oct. 30 to Nov. 13. Times: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum six, maximum 10 couples. Instructor: Tim and Melanie Folkerts.

Trunk-Or-Treat contest

Kids will come -- we had 250 last year -- so why not make them happy? It is also a great way to showcase your business or organization and have a great time doing it. Decorate your trunk (trunk of a car, back of a van or pickup, etc.), hand out goodies (promo items, candy, flyers, etc.) to the trunk-or-treaters and have a great time. We want to fill the parking lot. When: Saturday. Time: Set up between 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Trunk or Treating: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Prizes: Prize money will be awarded.

Group fitness schedule

Class schedules and descriptions can be seen online at www.haysrec.org. All classes are drop-in classes for $2 per class. Punch cards can be purchased at the HRC office for $20 for 12 punches.
