Rural Telephone and Nex-Tech sponsored 30 area students to attend the Kansas Youth Leadership Academy camp at Fort Hays State University this month. KYLA is a statewide, comprehensive and all-inclusive program designed to promote youth leadership development. The Academy Camps, previously known as the Kansas Youth Leadership Camp, promote positive and healthy lifestyles, character building and leadership development.

Students who registered through Rural Telephone or Nex-Tech's Web sites were entered in a drawing from which 15 middle school students and 15 high school students randomly were chosen to attend the KYLA camps.

The middle school students selected were Michael Wagenblast, Athol; Jaclyn Benoit, Damar; Gerit Wagner, Esbon; Chase Wagner, Esbon; Michael Gauby, Great Bend; Samantha Younie, Hays; Courtney Sauer, Hays; Donovan Lumpkin, Phillipsburg; Seth Hachmeister, Natoma; Gavyn Peterson-Shea, Phillipsburg; Christian Garland, Russell; Sam Krug, Russell; Janna Schulte, Russell; Alexandra Ptacek, Russell; Mackenzie Lumpkin, Phillipsburg; and Eric Rourke, Russell.

The high school winners were Darian Patten, Russell; Evan Strobel, Great Bend; Gareth Peterson-Shea, Phillipsburg; Holly Sparks, Logan; Kaylin Hawman, WaKeeney; Kylee Pywell, Plainville; Lacey Couse, Palco; Megan Heier, Grainfield; Nicholas Irwin, Phillipsburg; Sheradin Fabrizius, Hays; Tanner Aherin, Phillipsburg; Thomas Rachow, Phillipsburg; Tiffany Russell, Hill City; and Violette Pinson, Mankato.

The sponsorships covered registration fees, all meals and snacks, lodging in the FHSU residence halls, a T-shirt and camp materials for the selected students.

Middle school students were invited to attend a three-day, two-night camp June 2 to 4, while high school students were invited to attend a four-day, three-night camp Monday through Thursday. Highlights for campers included the opportunity to gain new skills and experiences in workshops, meet other student leaders from across the state, improve goal setting and problem solving skills and more.
