April is National Poetry Month, and Hays Public Library celebrates by hosting an annual poetry contest. This year's poetry contest will be at 7 p.m. Friday. Participants must bring three copies of an original work, read it before the crowd, and the entries are judged by Fort Hays State University faculty and others before prizes are awarded. Following the contest portion of the evening, open mic poetry readings are encouraged for anyone who wishes to share their favorite pieces.

The gallery will be open for anyone who wants to listen, read submissions or just enjoy the atmosphere. A coffee bar and refreshments will be served.
