LURAY -- Javon Letsch, 8-year-old son of Julie Letsch, Luray, was a finalist in the International Pedal Tractor Pull on Aug. 11 in Fairfield, Iowa. He placed second in the event.
Hawkeye Pedal Pull was in charge of the event. The top five placers from the National Pedal Pull in September qualified to compete with the finalists from Canada.
Javon qualified to compete last year in the 7-year-old boys' division by winning at the Russell County Free Fair and Luray Friendship Day 2012 to advance to the State Pedal Pull at the Kansas State Fair in September.
He placed second at the state pull to qualify him for the National Pedal Pull in Mitchell, S.D., at the Corn Palace.
He place fifth in his division to qualify for the International Pedal Pull, which was last weekend. He was one of six from the United States and Canada to pull.
A full pull is 40 feet, pulling 330 pounds of weight on the sled. He pulled 34.5 feet to win second place in the 2013 International Pedal Pull.
Letsch also has won the Russell County Free Fair pull, the Ellis County pull and the Logan County pull this year and has qualified to go to the 2013 state fair Sept. 8 in the 8-year-old division.
Letsch is the grandson of Ronnie and Glenna (Chrisler) Letsch, and the great-grandson of Richard Letsch, Luray, and Dale and Jean Chrisler of Oakley, formerly of Russell. He will be a third-grader at Natoma Elementary School this school year.
