Mr. Shulman goes to D.C.
With the IRS harassment of the Tea Party, prior to the 2012 election, it is interesting to note former IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman visited the White House 118 times in 2010 to 2011. When asked about the visits, he said he couldn't remember why he went to the White House so frequently, but he could recall one visit when he took his children to the White House Easter-egg hunt.
The current Acting Director of the IRS, who took over in November, also has made numerous visits to the White House, though variations in the spelling of his name, on the White House visitor logs, make it difficult to determine exactly how many times.
Mark Everson, former IRS commissioner, said he remembers making only one trip to the White House between 2003 and 2007. The frequent trips to the Obama White House far outnumber the times other administrations felt the need to meet with the IRS.
Earlier in May, President Barack Obama said, "The IRS, as an independent agency, requires absolute integrity, and people have to have confidence that they're applying the laws in a nonpartisan way."
