INDIANAPOLIS | State lawmakers agreed Friday to wait until next year to enact legislation denying parenting time and visitation rights to a man who fathers a child through rape.
Senate Bill 190, sponsored by state Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso, was revised to require the General Assembly review the issue in a summer study committee.
"While I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get it done this year, I think we've made tremendous progress in awareness of the issue," Charbonneau said.
The House and Senate differed on the standard for denying parental rights to rapists.
The Senate voted 50-0 for the study committee. The House approved it 91-0.
