RUSSELL (GH) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Russell Police Department in investigating the death of a 14-month-old Russell boy.
The child died Wednesday night at a Wichita hospital and an autopsy was being performed Thursday, said Melissa Underwood, KBI spokeswoman.
Underwood said investigators are hopeful that preliminary autopsy results might give sufficient information about the cause of the child's death to move forward with the investigation.
According to a news release from Russell Police Chief Dale Weimaster, the police department received a call Sunday about a boy who was being treated at Wesley Medical Center.
The boy's death is being investigated as a possible case of child abuse.
Underwood said the KBI is not releasing the boy's name.
