HAYSVILLE -- The Hays Larks took Thursday's game -- and the top spot in the Jayhawk League -- from the Haysville Heat.
Hays (21-12) edged Haysville 4-3, to take over first place in the Jayhawk League race at 15-10. The Larks won the series two games to one behind the third straight solid start from Justin Ziegler and another save from Michael Burchett.
Ziegler (3-0), making his third start after seven appearances coming out of the bullpen, worked seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. After Malcolm Purdy pitched a scoreless eighth, Burchett came in for the ninth to record his eighth save, striking out the last batter with a runner on second.
Haysville (21-13-1, 17-12) scored two in the second, but Hays got two in the third on Aaron Cornell's RBI double and Cody Gougler's run-scoring single.
The Heat took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, but the Larks got a run-scoring groundout from Cornell in the fifth.
Hays then took its first lead with a run in the seventh. Cornell walked with two outs, stole second and advanced to third on the catcher's throwing error. He then scored on Gougler's double.
Hays will play host to Greeley, Colo., for a pair of non-conference games Saturday and Sunday. Game time both days is 7 p.m. at Larks Park.
