HAYSVILLE -- The Haysville Heat continue a strong second half of the season, and extended its lead in the Jayhawk League race.
The Hays Larks saw their three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night after a 5-2 loss to the Heat in the first of a three-game series in Haysville.
The Heat moved to 21-11 overall and 17-10 in league play, while Hays dropped to 19-12, 13-10, while not being able to overcome two errors in the series opener.
Hays jumped out to an early, 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Cody Gougler, but Haysville answered in the first with two runs, one coming on a one-out throwing error.
Haysville tacked on one more run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead against Larks starter Kirk Jewasko and reliever Ethan Leiter. Jewasko (2-3) took the loss in five innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
Hays managed another run in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Rick Stover, but had just three hits for the game, one each for Stover, Gougler and Aaron Cornell.
The two teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. game today.
The Larks are home Saturday against Greeley, Colo.
