The Ellis County Treasurer's office is in charge for the first time this year of commercial vehicle registration.
The treasurer's office will process those registrations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The final day to register a commercial vehicle is Friday, although penalties are being waived for a month. Tickets still will be given for expired tags.
A commercial vehicle is a self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used to transport property or passengers if the gross weight or combination weight is 10,001 or more pounds; is designed to transport 15 or more passengers, including the driver; or is used to transport hazardous materials. In lieu of personal property tax, a commercial vehicle fee will be collected for the counties.
The county also has heavy truck and trailer renewals at this time; that deadline also is Friday. Some of those vehicles would fall under commercial vehicle registration. Visit TruckingKS.org to learn if a vehicle should be registered under the new commercial vehicle system.
Those people who own a vehicle that changes over to a commercial vehicle should go to the county appraiser's office to remove that vehicle from the personal property tax rolls.
