Volunteers with Foster Grandparent Program were honored for their service to children with special needs at the Jan. 12 meeting at Fort Hays State University's Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Those recognized for their commitment were Victoria grandparents Cora Lou Ryan for five years, Doris Robben for six years, Doris Westhusin for 11 years and Carol Cline for 11 years. Hays Foster Grandparents honored were Irma Chlumsky, one year, Karen Noon, three years, and Gloria Wagner, four years.

Foster Grandparents are people who are 55 years of age and older who commit at least 15 hours each week helping children. They serve as role models for positive behaviors, tutors and mentors. Their commitment of time entitles them to benefits including a tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour to enable them to serve without cost to themselves.

The Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored by FHSU and provides service opportunities for older adults in western Kansas. The program is funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service, Washington. Funds are also provided by Ellis County. For information about the program, call (785) 628-5809.
