Six Senior Companion volunteers were honored for their service to the elderly in Ellis County at the Jan. 12 meeting.

Frieda Renz of Rush Center was recognized for one year of service; Hays companions O'della Bedard has served with the program seven years; Donna Bradley and Frank Bradley were recognized for 10 years of service; Joyce Walters has served 13 years; and Alberta Knoll of Ellis was honored for 17 years.

Senior Companions must be at least 55 years of age or older and be willing to make a commitment of serving 15 hours each week. They are provided benefits which include a tax-free stipend, transportation allowance, accident and liability insurance, paid orientation, monthly training, sick leave, vacation, holidays and recognition. There is no cost to the clients or their families for the services provided.

The Senior Companion Program is sponsored by Fort Hays State University and funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service, Washington. Ellis County also provides support to the programs. For information, call FHSU at (785) 628-5809.
