The hit heard around the state
- Story by Callie Kuntz -
“When you''re playing against a stacked deck, compete even harder. Show the world how much you''ll fight for the winner’s circle. If you do, someday the cellophane will crackle off a fresh pack, one that belongs to you, and the cards will be stacked in your favor,” -Pat Riley. The Quinter Bulldogs continued to prove themselves by beating Rock Hills in the first game of the playoffs on Tuesday, November 4.
“We knew we had to play at a higher level, and we turned it up a notch. The whole team played really well together,” said senior, Thatcher Deaton.
With 10:36 in the first quarter, senior, Thatcher Deaton laid a spanking on Rock Hills in the end zone for a safety, giving Quinter the early lead, 2-0. “My safety was awesome; but most of the credit has to go to my front linemen and to coach Ruckman who had me on a blitz. Boomo (Scott Ochs) held him up, and I was right there for the hit,” said Deaton. Senior quarterback, Brady Reed teamed up with fellow senior, Matt Bird for a five yard touchdown reception. The Bulldogs were playing great defense, and during one possession, sophomore, Brian Ochs made his presence known. On a quarterback keeper, Brady Reed ran to the left side of the field and Ochs made a massive block, knocking his opponent flat on his back. This hit was heard by people in the stands and remembered by the poor soul lying on the field. The Quinter offense ran various sneaks. One led to Brady Reed running 15 yards past a pile of Grizzles, who thought they had tackled the ball carrier, for a Bulldog touchdown. Senior, Jordon Hargitt rushed the ball in for the extra 2 points, Quinter led, 16-6.
“The team did really well. We were down for a little bit in the first quarter but the important thing is we got passed that and overcame our opponents. Making that hit felt good. The Rock Hills player saw me coming but didn’t have enough time to react. After the hit, I heard the crowd roar, it was pretty cool,” said Brian Ochs.
In the second quarter, Quinter stepped on the field raring to go. Hargitt had a 22 yard run into the end zone. Senior, Skyler Wittman leaped high for the reception from Reed for a 12 yard touchdown pass. With .54 left in the half, Wittman intercepted the ball and ran across and down the field 70 yards for the touchdown. Hargitt contributed by scoring the 2 point conversion. Quinter was not ready to go in for halftime; Wittman had a fumble recovery and ran it back 20 yards for another Bulldog TD. On the next play, Bird caught the ball for the extra 2 points; the Dawgs were on top, 44-6.
Quinter came out in the second half with intensity streaming from everywhere: in spirit, pride and soul. With 8:18 on the clock, Brady Reed ran 15 yards for a touchdown, but Quinter didn’t convert on the extra 2 points. Two minutes later, 6:19, Brady again ran in a one yard touchdown to end the game, 56-6.
When asked how the team will prepare for the game against Macksville, senior, Brady Reed stated, “I don’t think we will go about the game any differently. This game is just another step. We have to prepare like we have all year.”
“We have, since the end of last season, been teaching the guys about "One". We stress that they are part of something bigger than themselves. By doing this, they understand how important each one of them are to not only us as coaches, but to the success of the team. By playing for each other, it makes it very difficult for them to quit when something goes bad. Each one of these guys has invested quite a bit of time to be on this team. There were lots of tire flips, pull-ups, push-ups and sprints. They know they have worked hard as well. Therefore, they play with a lot of confidence. It''s not being arrogant, they are just confident that when it comes time, they can get the job done. Being confident in football is huge to the success of a program. I was very proud of how the guys played on Tuesday. It was probably one of the best total games one of my teams have played. All aspects of the football game were played at a very high level, and they maintained it through the whole game. Coach Roesch and coach Ruckman did an outstanding job preparing the guys to play, and it showed,” said head coach, Greg Woolf.
