Redemption is Sweet

- Story by Callie Kuntz -

“Seeking to forget makes exile all the longer; the secret of redemption lies in remembrance,” Richard von Weizsaecker. Do you remember when Quinter traveled to Macksville about a year ago? The Bulldogs came home with a heart breaking loss that ended their season. Not this year, folks! On Saturday, November 7, Quinter battled Macksville for the chance to go to Sub-State. Everyone will remember this day; the day the Quinter Bulldogs shut the Macksville Mustangs out 50-0. “We knew our offense could score, but it was our defense that was going to have to win us the game. Our plan going into the game was to shut down the run game and to make them pass,” commented sophomore, Joe Simon.

In the first quarter, both teams played evenly. Neither team could move their offense and very little yards were gained. This made the teams antsy and panicked the fans. “We knew they were going to come out giving us everything they had. We didn’t panic after the first quarter. We remained patient until we figured out what would work. We made the proper adjustments, and then we didn’t turn back,” said senior, Jordon Hargitt.

In the second quarter, Quinter bucked up and got their heads in the game. Senior, Jordon Hargitt ran 34 yards into the end zone with 11:53 on the clock. Senior quarterback, Brady Reed ran for the extra 2 points. With 9:00 showing on the clock, Hargitt ran a 2 yard touchdown. Hargitt loved the end zone, scoring again with 4:45 until halftime. He also found his way into the endzone for the 2 point conversion. Quinter was not done yet, Hargitt ran 31 yards for another Bulldog TD. Hargitt, with help from the offensive line, gave the Bulldogs life, rejuvenating them, 28-0 going into the half. “We just exploited their weaknesses. This made it easy to get some good offensive drives going,” stated Hargitt.

Coming out of half, Quinter was wound for sound! Their defense was spectacular holding Macksville to very few yards. On one of Quinters offensive possessions, Brady Reed rolled out of the pocket and ran with the ball. Before he got tackled, Reed lateraled the ball back to Hargitt for him to pick up extra yardage. “The ball was supposed to be passed to Matt. He wasn’t open so I took off running. As I was being tackled, Jordon appeared, I pitched him the ball and he took off with it,” said Reed. No one scored until 0:48 left in the third when sophomore, Logan Reed ripped through the pack of players and ran 40 yards for a touchdown. Quinter still was in total control, 36-0.

“Our D-Lineman lined up differently and used different tactics to get to the QB. Linebackers also had different reads to blow up the running backs,” stated Simon.

In the fourth quarter, Brady Reed and Matt Bird hooked up for a 31 yard touchdown reception. Hargitt ran the ball to the end zone the next play, converting for the 2 points. With 6:18 left to go, Brady Reed ran 19 yards to cap Quinter’s victory, 50-0. “We knew they were good and capable of scoring or else they wouldn’t have been in the playoffs. However; we were confident in ourselves. All we needed was that first touchdown then we started the ‘Snowball effect,’” said senior, Zach Nemechek.

“During this game there were no surprises. We scouted Macksville well enough to know what they were going to run. I knew our kids were going to come out at a high level. Between the first and second quarter, there were no adjustments made. In the first, we just ran the play script to see what defense they would come with. Then in the second quarter we ran our plays according to that. It doesn’t surprise me that we have come this far. It’s not a personal accomplishment because we are one team,” said coach Roesch.
