The Real Deal
- Story by Callie Kuntz -
The biggest game of the season so far was played on Friday, October 23rd when the Quinter Bulldogs took on the Hill City Ringnecks in district play. This game was riding on a lot; the winner has the first two games of regional’s at home. Home field advantage is extremely important. Not only will the players have the community behind them, but they will be playing on the field that they’re accustomed to.
Quinter came out with a bang! With 5:52, senior quarterback, Brady Reed dropped back in the pocket and threw a 15 yard touchdown pass to senior, Scott Ochs. Ochs finished what he started by making the 2 point conversion the very next play. With 0:38 on the clock, Brady Reed had great coverage when he threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver, Matt Bird. Bird was on a roll, getting Quinter the extra 2 points also. It was 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs defense was exceptional. In the second quarter, senior, Scott Ochs made a spectacular hit that you could hear on the sidelines. The next play, senior, Zach Nemechek stopped a Ringneck dead in his tracks by lunging forward for a tackle. That wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs for they were hungry for more. After the Nemechek hit, sophomore, Brian Ochs wanted to get into the action, and he did by intercepting the ball. With the clock reading 6:10, Brady Reed jolted his way into the end zone for a Quinter touchdown. The next play, Reed got down low and powered his way in for the 2 point conversion, 24-0, halftime.
The Dawgs air game was huge. With 8:27 in the third quarter, Reed threw an 18 yard pass to Bird for the TD. Reed was forceful, running the ball into the end zone for the 2 point conversion on a quarterback keeper. Even though the defense was playing strong, Hill City scored on them, but Quinter was in control 32-6 at the end of the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter began, Quinter had to play to keep the lead while Hill City had to catch up. Sophomore, Logan Reed joined the action by rushing 1 yard for a touchdown with 11:27 on the clock. The Bulldogs ended strong, winning 38-12. Senior, Skyler Wittman said, “Hill City was a good team and has our respect. The coaches had us exceptionally prepared and ready for this battle. We came out and played like we were coached and won us a district title.” Coach, Brian Roesch said, “With it being our second to last game of the regular season, it was extremely good to play as well as we did and to have everything click the right way for us before heading into the state playoffs.”
