DORRANCE — The 100th Department of Kansas Convention was held in Hutchinson May 19 to 21. Dorrance American Legion Post 334 Member Jimmy Strachan received the Commander of the Year Award during the convention activities. Dorrance Post 334 also received a 100 percent reporting post award and received the Kenneth L. Young Membership Award for achieving 165.38 percent of its membership quota.
The District Six convention was held in Phillipsburg April 14. During the convention, Strachan was elected district vice-commander. Based on his District Six elected position, Strachan was sworn in as voting members of the department executive committee.
“The Commander of the Year Award went to me,” Strachan said. “But the honor rightly goes to the entire Dorrance community. Post 334 is the center of community events.”
When asked about his involvement with the American Legion, Strachan had a quick reply.
“The American Legion, Sons of American Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary are fantastic organizations,” he said. “Unfortunately, they don’t always get the recognition they deserve for helping our nation’s veterans. The convention ran very smoothly. Department officers and staff deserve a lot of credit.”
In addition to usual business transactions, convention delegates passed two resolutions. The first originated in Phillipsburg Post 252. It was a Department of Kansas constitutional amendment to divide the 6th District into the 6th and 9th Districts effective July 1, 2019. The second originated in Dodge City Post 47. It is titled: Strategy to Maximize Alien Prisoner Transfers.
