4-H Turkey Trot scheduled for Nov. 17

Fort Hays State University's Leadership 310 group has paired with Ellis County 4-H to help organize the first 4-H Turkey Trot in Hays.

Participants can walk or run the 4-H Turkey Trot course -- a 5K on Nov. 17 at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

The money raised through registration will be used to provide funding to send 4-H kids to camp.

Rachael Smith, a Leadership 310 group member, said the goal is to raise $1,000.

"The intent is to raise money for scholarships that kids can apply for," said Susan Schlichting, Extension 4-H youth development agent for Ellis County.

The scholarships will help children cover the camp costs and be able to attend the Kansas 4-H Camp at Rock Springs in Junction City.

In addition to registration money put toward scholarships, people can donate additional money if they wish, Schlichting said.

In addition to raising funds, the event also promotes and educates community members and surrounding areas on the importance of living a healthy life.

Check-in for the event is from 7:30 to 8 a.m.

If interested in participating in the event, registration is required.

Smith said even though pre-registration is encouraged so the right sizes of shirts are available, participants can register the day of the 5K.

Registration is $20 for the first participant and $15 for each additional family member until Saturday. After Saturday, the registration fee is $25.

Smith said those who register and participate will get a T-shirt.

Registration forms can be found at FHSU at the front desks in McMindes Hall, Wiest Hall, the FHSU Wellness Center and at Student Service Center in Memorial Union.

Registration forms also are available at the Ellis County Extension office.
