House adopts bill requiring voter ID

TOPEKA (HNS) -- The Kansas House voted today to resurrect a proposal requiring most voters under age 65 to show photo identification to vote in person.

Similar legislation stalled last session despite being widely supported by Republicans in both chambers. Democrats mostly oppose it.

House members voted 74-49, again largely along party lines, in favor of instituting photo ID requirements to vote in person by Jan. 1, 2010.

The action sends the bill to the Senate, which can vote to send the measure to the governor or appoint legislative negotiators to craft a final version.

Supporters of the proposal say it's needed to protect the integrity of elections. But opponents counter that it would make voting more difficult.
