Eagles rally for Zone win

DODGE CITY -- The Hays Eagles Legion baseball team rallied with three runs in the eighth inning Monday to take a 7-5 win against Buhler in their Class AAA Zone tournament opener.

The Eagles (29-8) trailed 5-1 after five innings, then scored three runs in the sixth and three in the eighth to rally.

In the sixth, Connor Rule and Kade Parker led off the inning with walks, then Layne Downing followed with a three-run home run, his team-leading third homer of the season, and second in the last two games.

Then in the eighth, Marcus Altman led off with a triple. Dalton stout singled in the first run. Later, Zack Legleiter had a two-run triple, scoring Kaden Rohr and Jarrett Pfannenstiel.

Downing got the win in three innings of relief of starter Cole Schumacher. Schumacher gave up all five runs (three earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Downing (9-0, 0.94 earned-run average) gave up two hits through three innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Eagles move in to today's 8 p.m. game.
