Contested races across Ellis County in Tuesday election

Voters go to the polls Tuesday to elect board of education members and city officials.

Advance voting for qualified voters, continues until noon Monday at the Ellis County Clerk's office in the Ellis County Courthouse.

Ellis County Clerk Donna Maskus said voters must have a photo ID to vote.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and located in Hays, Ellis, Victoria and Schoenchen.

Voter turnout in local city and school board elections, Maskus said last week, has hovered near 20 percent in the last two elections, which were in 2011 and 2009.

Altogether, nine school districts have land within Ellis County boundaries, but for some it isn't much land.

"All three of the home (Ellis County) school districts are at-large positions," Maskus said.

Three positions are open on the Hays USD 489 Board of Education, and five candidates have filed.

Candidates are Lance Bickle, Danielle Robben, Kathleen Fischer, Josh Waddell and incumbent Richard Kraemer. Alan Moore and Sharon Befort did not file for re-election.

The successful candidates will take their seats July 1.

Filing for the three positions on the Hays City Commission are Shaun Musil, Dominic Pianalto, Todd Gabel and incumbents Ron Mellick and Eber Phelps. The two candidates who receive the most votes will receive four-year terms, and the third place vote-getter will receive a two-year term. The successful candidates will be sworn in at the April 11 city commission meeting.

Other elections in Ellis County include:

Ellis: Two candidates, Lyle Johnston, council member, and incumbent David R. McDaniel, have filed for mayor. Four candidates, Terry Redetzke, Brian Raub, Jolene Niernberger and John Leiker, have filed for the three available spots on city council. Raub, Niernberger and Leiker currently serve on the council. Incumbent Faith Scheck filed for city treasurer.

Three candidates have filed for the three at-large seats on the Ellis USD 388 board. They are incumbent Jerry Pfeifer, Patricia L. Graff and John A. Walz.

Victoria: Three council members and the mayor position are open. Curtis B. Unrein, incumbent, filed for mayor. Three incumbents, Kenneth A. Pfeifer, Jan Piesker, and Leroy J. Schmidtberger, filed for the three open council seats.

Only two candidates filed to fill the three positions on the Victoria USD 432 board.

Incumbent P.J. Nowak and Alan Schulte are candidates.

Schoenchen: Incumbent Richard L. Klaus filed for mayor. For the five open council seats, Thomas Cole Dinges and incumbents Kevin J. Bieker and Jason Schneider filed.
