State grant to benefit walking trail

ELLIS -- The Community Foundation of Ellis has received word from the Topeka-based Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans it has been awarded a grant by the organization. The grant to the Community Foundation of Ellis, totaling $15,000, will be used to purchase concrete for the Dennis Schoenthaler Memorial Walking Trail located in Creekside Park in Ellis.

"This grant will allow us to make Dennis' dream of a safe, off-the-street walking trail become a reality," said Dena Patee, project coordinator. "We are very proud to be able to work with the Schoenthaler Family on Denny's Trail."

The Community Foundation of Ellis was established in 2006 to provide a vehicle for local nonprofit organizations to apply for grants that will leverage locally raised dollars to maximize the potential dollars for any project. Since its inception, the Community Foundation of Ellis has returned more than $58,000 into the community for various projects and activities. The community foundation has worked with several community groups, including the Ellis United Methodist Church on the Kids Club activities, Fifth Quarter and the Ellis Food Box Program, among others.
