FHSU will have day of service in King's honor

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Fort Hays State University will host a day of service Saturday.

The day of service consists of a variety of community service projects for FHSU students and community members wishing to volunteer.

The projects include:

* An instructional basketball camp from 9:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at Hays Recreation Commission. Volunteers will help instruct children from kindergarten to third grade in the fundamentals of basketball.

* Students can sign up to help clean stairwells at Wooster Place on the FHSU campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All cleaning supplies will be provided.

* A read-a-thon will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at Memorial Union. Volunteers will read a variety of stories to children of various ages. Books will be provided and will be divided by age level.

* Students and community members are encouraged to come in and make fleece, no-sew blankets for Project Linus from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Union. Volunteers will assist those who need help.

* Volunteers are encouraged to write letters from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Union to troops who are overseas, who served in past wars or who have been injured in the line of duty. Volunteers will be available to assist.

* The Day of Service will conclude with a soul food dinner at 7 p.m., hosted by the Black Student Union, at Memorial Union's Fort Hays Ballroom.

* An MLK celebration, "Vision of a King: Devotion to Servant Leadership and Unity through Civil Disobedience," will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Union's Fort Hays Ballroom.

Patrick Roscoe, Missouri City, Texas, freshman, will sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and Jamison Green, Dallas senior, will perform an original poem. Staff Sgt. Jose Rosales will deliver the keynote address.

A dessert bar will be offered.
