FHSU baseball picks up road win

WICHITA -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team defeated Newman University 12-5 in a road non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon. FHSU improved to 14-12 overall, while Newman dropped to 12-14.

Senior catcher Jay Sanders hit a two-out grand slam in the first inning and then junior Horace Johnson followed with a homer and leadoff hitter Clayton Garland added a run-scoring single as the Tigers batted around and scored six runs. In the second inning, Johnson had a two-run single, while senior Sam Thornton drove in a run with a single for a 9-0 lead. Johnson hit a homer later in the game.

The Tigers used six pitchers and junior Chase Newman worked five innings of five-hit, two run-ball to move to 1-0.
