George William Schippers

George William Schippers, 84, Hays, formerly of Grainfield, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Via Christi Village, Hays.

He was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Victoria to John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers.

He married Lillian Marie Dome on Feb. 9, 1948, in Hays. She preceded him in death Nov. 8, 2005. He was a farmer.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Hays, a former member of St. Agnes Church, Grainfield, Third Degree St. Agnes Council Knights of Columbus, Hoxie Elk's Lodge member, and was a past school board member of Hoxie USD 412.

He enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo, dancing and following activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons, George Schippers Jr., Colby, David Schippers and wife, Stephanie, Hoxie, Charlie Schippers and wife, Joan, Hays, and Jeff Schippers and wife, Janice, Broken Arrow, Okla.; six daughters, Linda Nicholas and husband, Frank, Waco, Texas, Diane Seiler and husband, Leroy, Medicine Lodge, Janet Patterson and husband, John, Pittsburg, Mary William and husband, Dan, and Carol Campbell and husband, Max, all of Hoxie, and Karen Cudney and husband, Brian, Wichita; three brothers, Lawrence Schippers and wife, JoAnn, Springfield, Mo., Paul Schippers, Victoria, and Norman Schippers and wife, Lila, The Woodlands, Texas; four sisters, Sister Mary Ann Schippers, Fond du Lac, Wis., Lucy Baier and husband, Paul, and Lillian Leiker, all of Hays, and Estella Kuhn, Victoria; 38 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Khyleen Schwarzenberger, Wichita; four sisters-in-law, Armella Schippers, Olathe, Marietta Lies, Wichita, Stella Ekovich, Sarasota, Fla., and Alexia Corbitt, Sharpsburg, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Daniel Joseph Schippers in November 1948 and Mark Schippers in April 1993; an infant grandson, John Dale Patterson II; three brothers, Herman Schippers, John F. Schippers and Arthur Schippers; two brothers-in-law, Frank Kuhn and Maurice Leiker; and two sisters-in-law, Loretta Schippers and Theresa Schippers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 10:45 a.m., both at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.

A Sisters of St. Agnes rosary will be at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a vigil at 7:30 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Sisters of St. Agnes in care of the funeral home.
