Training drill causes stir in Goodland

Special to The Hays Daily News

GOODLAND -- A radio transmission regarding a Monday morning training exercise by the Goodland Police Department might have been misconstrued as the real thing.

Participating in the drill with the Goodland police are the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Sherman County Sheriff's Office and Sherman County Commissions, according to a news release from Ryan Murray, the county's emergency management coordinator.

"There is no active situation taking place in Sherman County or in the city of Goodland at this time. It is a training drill," the news release reads.

Authorities were unaware that the transmission caused a stir until a news station from Wichita called to inquire, said LeeAnn Taylor, a spokeswoman for emergency preparedness.

"We wanted to get a press release out to squelch anything before the word got out," she said. "We didn't want to panic anyone."
