Foundation will help spark Russell youth program

Special to The Hays Daily News

RUSSELL -- Russell County Area Community Foundation this week announced $4,500 in grants to the Russell Recreation Commission.

"The community foundation is excited to partner with Russell Recreation to offer new educational programs and support improvements at its state-of-the-art exercise facility," said Angela Muller, foundation executive director.

The grants include $2,000 to develop a nature-based program for children 3 to 12 years old. The grant will help purchase prism microscopes, binoculars, field guides, insect nets and other material children will use in a new hands-on, summer learning class. The eventual goal is to offer nature classes year-round, expanding the program to adults.

The Russell Recreation Commission also received $2,500 to support efforts to improve its new center.

"An anonymous donor has come forward to offer $25,000 to the RRC, provided it can raise a matching amount by July 1," Muller said. "The community foundation noticed this and wanted to be a part of this effort."

Since its inception in 2001, the foundation and its donors have directed more than $1 million to meaningful causes and issues throughout the Russell County area, including healthful living, the arts, historical preservation and hunger relief.
