HHS boys first, girls second at Buhler

BUHLER -- The Hays High School boys' track and field team picked up another team victory in dominant fashion Friday, while the Indian girls finished second.

The Hays High boys, with gold medals in nine events scored 221 points, well ahead of runner-up Buhler (100.5). The Indian girls scored 80 points, with Salian Central taking top honors iwth 87.

The Indian boys were paced by three gold medals for senior Adam Deterding. Deterding won high jump (6-foot-4), triple jump (43-5) and the 110-meter hurdles (13.59 seconds).

Also, junior Emilio Mitchell won a pair of gold medals. Mitchell won the javelin with a toss of 164-1, then finished first in the 100-meter dash in 11.11.

The Indians' 400-meter relay team of junior Ethan Fort, seniors Tanner Staab and Eric Stumon, and sophomore Landon Munsch, finished first in 8:09.56, while Stumon took top honors in the 800 run in 1:57.16.

Junior Cade Sharp won the shot put, throwing 55-11, and was one of three Indian medalists in the discus, finishing second with a 157-7. Seniors Luke Madden (144-8 1/2 ) and Zack Binder (137-11 1/2) were third and sixth, respectively.

The Hays High boys collected 30 medals in the meet, finsihing 1,2,3 in the triple jump with Deterding, senior TJ Dreiling and sophomore Jordan Windholz, respectively. Hays High also earned three medals in the pole vault, paced by junior Kyler Meyers' fourth-place finish.

The Indian girls were led by four medals for sophomore Wendy Zimmerman. Zimmerman won the triple jump, going 32-8, and finished second in the high jump, clearing 5-2. Zimmerman also finished second in the 800, running 2:27.57. Zimmerman also ran a leg of the third-place 1,600 relay, along with freshmen Mattison Schlaefli and Summer Smith, and junior Caitlyn Billinger. Schlaefli also was third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.20) and fourth in the javelin (95-10).
