Special to The Hays Daily News

Two Hays bands will be inducted into at the Kansas Music Hall of Fame on Saturday in Lawrence.

The Playmate Blues Band and the Tempests, along with the Dangerous Dinks of Salina, are among the 13 bands or individuals to be honored at the annual presentation and concert at Liberty Hall.

"It's quite an honor to be recognized by your peers," said Gary Cooley, former bass player for the Playmate Blues Band.

Cooley will be unable to attend the induction but added former band member Mike Kelley, a Topeka attorney, will represent the band. The group began in La Crosse and later moved to Hays. It performed throughout the Midwest from 1964 through 1967.

The Tempests and the Dangerous Dinks will be attending and performing, as will the Exceptions, Junkyard Jazz, Ray Hildebrand and Chuck Mead.

The KMHOF was founded in 2004 to honor musicians and others in the industry who have made significant contributions to the musical history of Kansas and the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. The KMHOF endeavors to promote public interest in the musicians of the past, said Director Bill Lee, and encourages those of the present and future.

Previous inductees include Melissa Etheridge, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Mike Finnigan, Martina McBride and Kansas.

Kerry Livgren, founding member of Kansas, will be inducted as an individual this year.

Others with strong Hays connections are The Blue Things and the Fabulous Flippers.

Previous inductees and members of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame vote on nominees each October.

Tickets to the event are $30 per person and are available from the Liberty Hall box office at (785) 749-1972 or Ticketmaster. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.

Membership in the organization is open to the public. For more information on the event or joining the KMHOF, visit ksmusichalloffame.org.
