Spirit of giving ... to the community

Special to The Hays Daily News

Heartland Community Foundation is offering a gift-giving idea this holiday season.

"Because our Heartland Community Foundation is here to serve the charitable needs of the citizens of Ellis, Rooks and Trego counties, we have a initiated a Christmas gift program whereby those needs can easily be met," said Mendi Alexander, HCF board chairwoman.

"We suggest that instead of giving a friend or relative a tie, sweater or cologne this year for Christmas, that gift-givers give a gift to one of the charities listed below in their friend or relative's name," Alexander said. "Additionally, this is a wonderful opportunity to remember a loved one, friend or colleague by sending a gift in their name to our community foundation."

"When gift-givers join us in this program," Bob Lowen, HCF executive director, said, "we will send a personalized holiday card to the charity or person for whom the donor's gift is named, and we will provide donors with a tax receipt for their charitable gift."

"This type of gift fits everyone, every time and saves the donor time and money because there is no wrapping, mailing or returning," Lowen said.

Alexander said donors should send the name and address of the charity, individual or family they wish to honor, and a check for $25 or more, made out to Heartland Community Foundation, to P.O. Box 1673, Hays, KS 67601.

"We think this is a wonderful way to support one's favorite charity or to initiate a family legacy," Alexander said. "We will invest gifts received on behalf of the charity that receives the gifts, thus providing longtime support. Donor's gifts can benefit any of the following organizations or funds."

Heartland Healthy Living Fund; Heartland Area Action Fund; Heartland Administrative Fund; Mary Elizabeth Fund; Palco USD 269 Fund; Hays Area Children's Center; Boy Scouts of America; Hays Arts Council; First Care Clinic; Heartland Community Theatre; United Way of Ellis County; KSNWK Recreation Fund; Trees for a Beautiful Hays Fund; Vocal Music and Theater Fund for the Hays Arts Council; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County; Hays Recreation Commission Youth Fund; Kansas Children's Service League; Leadership Hays Children's Fund; Leadership Hays Fund.
