Dr. Hugh Alan Wiegman

Hugh Alan Wiegman, M.D., 79, Leawood, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013.

He was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Hastings, Neb., to Henry Wiegman and Grace Margaret Herring.

He was a 1951 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa, and from Iowa State University with a degree in chemical engineering in 1955.

Following a short time working for Dow Chemical in Ohio, he returned to Iowa, graduating from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1960. He then fulfilled a year of internship at Highland-Alameda Hospital, Oakland, Calif., and two years of general surgery at the Oakland (Calif.) Veterans Hospital. After that, he completed a three-year residency in otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) at the University of Iowa Hospitals, becoming board certified in 1966. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, as a second lieutenant. He was stationed at Randolph AFB in Texas and was promoted to captain, where he served for two years. He was honorably discharged in 1969. He joined an ENT practice in Kansas City, Kan. Leaving the practice a year later, he entered a three-year radiology residency, became a board-certified radiologist and established Radiology Associates P.A. of Hays, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include his former wife, Sybil Norton Wiegman, Topeka; a son, Jay and wife, Amy, Somonauk, Ill.; three daughters, Stacy Wiegman, Tega Cay, S.C., Molly Miller and husband, David C., Overland Park, and Rachel Wiegman, Lawrence; five grandchildren, Ellie Wiegman, Spencer Wiegman, Nathan Wiegman, Alexandra Miller and Olivia Miller; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gretchen Wiegman Tomlinson.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Old Mission United Methodist Church, Fairway.
