TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A Kansas Senate panel is unable to agree on a variety of tax increase proposals to close a projected gap in the 2011 budget.
The Assessment and Taxation Committee adjourned Thursday after failing to muster enough votes to endorse a variety of tax increase ideas. Suggestions ranged from a levy on sugary beverages to sales taxes.
The result means senators are now likely to debate a budget bill next week that is out of balance by $364 million.
Senate leaders say it appears likely that legislators will adjourn later this month for their traditional recess without adopting a base state budget.
Earlier, the House Appropriations Committee endorsed a budget drafted by GOP leadership that cuts state spending and puts $302 million into reserves.
