Monarchs stay alive in zone tourney

By The Hays Daily News

LINCOLN - The Hays Monarchs AA Legion baseball team stayed alive Monday in the Zone 6 Tournament in Lincoln.

Hays (15-13) jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Hoisington after two innings, then ended up with an 8-0 win after six innings via the run-rule. It was the fifth meeting of the summer between the teams.

Taylor Rome picked up the victory for Hays in four innings pitched. He gave up two of Hoisington's three hits, walked one and struck out two and moved to 2-1.

Hays had just four hits but capitalized on five Hoisington errors.

Braiden Werth, Pierce Schippers, Ryan Schippers and Grant Romme collected hits with Pierce and Ryan Schippers and Jordan Gottschalk driving in runs.

Pierce Schippers' hit was a double.

The win puts the Monarchs in Wednesday's 5 p.m. elimination game against Smith Center. If Hays wins, it will move into the 7:30 p.m. title round Wednesday against host Lincoln County.
