Polar Plunge meets $5,000 goal

Nine teams participated in Saturday's Polar Plunge at America's Best Value Inn.

Spearheaded by the Hays Police Department, the plunge is an offshoot of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and benefits Kansas Special Olympics.

There were fewer participants than last year, said Dawn Malott, a member of the organizing committee.

Despite fewer participants, the fourth annual event met organizers' goal of raising $5,000.

Crystal Katz was the top fundraising individual, and the What a Hoot team was the top fundraising team.

The Chill Seekers, with nine members representing the Ellis County Sheriff's Department, had the largest team.

The NYC Cabbies, a team of Dana Ellis, Stacy Lovewell, Robin Armbrister and Rodney Armbrister, won best costume. It is the third year in a row the team has won the costume award.
