Russell/Victoria takes third in 4A Division II

By The Hays Daily News

PRATT -- The Russell/Victoria High School baseball team's trip to the Class 4A Division II state finale resulted in a third-place trophy Friday at Pratt Community College.

The Broncos, making the program's first trip to state since 2008 and the fourth overall, fell in Friday's semifinals, 10-0 at the hands of eventual state champion Kansas City-Bishop Ward, then defeated Baxter Springs, 15-1 to secure the third-place finish.

Seventh-seeded Russell/Victoria (16-9) started the tournament with a 11-2 victory over No. 3 seed Wichita-Trinity Academy.

Russell/Victoria was in the second year of a two-year agreement between the two schools for baseball. First-year Bronco coach Zach Shipley said prior to the tournament it seemed as though the agreement would continue, pending Board of Education approval from both districts.

The team loses just four seniors combined from the two schools.
