TMP soccer picks up win

By The Hays Daily News

The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls' soccer team produced an offensive explosion Thursday it hasn't seen in years.

The Monarchs defeated Wichita Independent 6-2 on Thursday at TMP Field. It was the most goals TMP (1-1) has scored in a single match since 2008 when TMP scored six twice against Wichita-Word of Life.

Offensively, TMP had fallen into hard times recently. The Monarchs scored nine total goals last season and six in 2011, so Thursday's scoring output was a pleasant sign of improvement to TMP head coach Darryl Wellbrock.

"They played very well," he said.

The game originally was scheduled at Independent, but since Independent also was hosting a track and field meet that day, school officials requested its soccer game be played at TMP.

TMP actually was missing a player Thursday, so the bench featured just one player resting at a time. Meanwhile, Independent had 19 players on its roster.

Nevertheless, the Monarchs maintained their endurance, going up 2-0 at half and outscoring Independent 4-2 in the second half.

"I think (the Independent coach) was going to try and wear us down, but our girls scored four goals in the second half versus two in the first half," Wellbrock said. "Our conditioning is coming along well."

Alyssa Keil scored twice for TMP, and Tyra Younie, Annaka Applequist, Racheal Hamel and Andie Marsell each added a goal. Younie and Grace Volker each posted two assists, and Bailey Rome had an assist.

Sarah Gustin played goalkeeper for TMP in the first half and had two saves, while Alivia Inlow was goalkeeper in the second half, tallying a save.

Independent's two goals were scored by Alise Coccetella and Rebecca Johnson. Independent goalkeeper Cydnee Bacci contributed seven saves.
