The Fort Hays State University men's basketball team was selected as the No. 3 seed for this week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. in Springfield, Mass, March, 24, 25, and 27.
Fort Hays (22-6), which lost 65-61 to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe Emporia State University in the first round of the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., on Friday, will take on No. 6 seed Central Oklahoma, the same first-round opponent as two seasons ago, in Saturday's first round in Wichita Falls, Texas, the home of Midwestern State University. Last time the two teams met, Central Oklahoma narrowly beat the Tigers, then went on to win the regional and advance to the Elite Eight.
MSU, which finished its season at 28-2, won the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the second straight year on Saturday. MIAA member University of Central Missouri is the No. 2 seed, and will take on No. 7 seed and MIAA member Missouri Western in the first round. University of Nebraska-Omaha, the MIAA tournament winner Sunday, earned the No. 5. seed.
