William D. Hayes

William D. "Bill" Hayes, 81, Topeka, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at his home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Marion County, W.Va., to Ray and Fay (Baker) Hayes.

He was employed 23 years for Sun Oil Well and Cementing, Hays, and retired after 25 years from Gaines Foods, later known as Del Monte Foods, Topeka.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.

Survivors include his wife, Sally (Holbrook) Hayes; his children, Alan Hayes, Green River, Wyo., Sharon Wood, League City, Texas, Pam Haslett, Gardner, Jan Hayes, Thornton, Colo., Bill Hayes, Hays, Kim Hayes, Louisville, Colo., and Jason Hayes, Topeka; two brothers, Danny Lewis, Winchester, Va., and Dave Lewis, Topeka; a sister, Patty Morgan, Alexandria, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ray and Dale Hayes and Joe and Andy Lewis; a sister, Dorothy Blanks; and a great-granddaughter, Allison Cunningham.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka; burial in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
