Area runners headed for state cross country meet

NEWTON -- Three runners from the Hays High School cross country team will head to next week's Class 5A state meet at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence.

On the girls' side, Marie Reveles finished in 15th place to qualify individually in a time of 16 minutes, 27.94 seconds and Haley George finished 18th for the Indians in 16:37.81 to also qualify.

For the Indian boys, Zackary Hopp finished 14th to qualify for state in 17:54.18.

As a team, the Indian girls finished in fourth place with 118 points. The boys also finished fourth with 96 points. Maize South was the top team in both races.

Class 4A
At McPherson, the Goodland boys earned a team qualification by finsihing second with 77 points, eight back of regional champion Hugoton.

Class 3A

The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys' team will head to the 3A state finale at Rim Rock after it finished second in the Ellsworth regional. The Monarchs, paced by a fourth-place finish for Andrew Hess, scored 82 points, 20 back of regional champion Salina-Sacred Heart. Mark Loftus finished 12th for the Monarchs and Matt Mindrup was 19th. Phillipsburg's Wyatt Ratzlaff finished second in 17:22.35, 21 seconds behind regional champion Alex Conn of Beloit. The Norton boys finished third with 96 points to qualify as a team. Marc Miller led the Bluejays with a fifth-place 18:38.01.

On the girls' side, Norton won the regional title with 43 points to advance. Sierra Griffith led the Bluejays by finishing fifth in 17:09.23. The Bluejays' Katelyn Engelbert was 9th in 17:33.15. TMP's Kayla Walker finished 11th in 17:39.05, but missed qualifying by five seconds.

Class 2A
At Meade, Ness City's Dray Carson, the defending Class 2A champion, finished second to make a repeat trip to the state finale. He came in at 17:07.64, more than half a minute behind Ellinwood's Pedro Montoya. Eagle teammate Connor Hawkins also qualified by finishing eighth in 17:53.13.

On the girls' side, Ness City's Jessie Rubottom punched her ticket to the state finale in Wamego with a third-place regional finish in 16:38.39.

Class 1A

At Grainfield, the Victoria boys' team qualified for the 1A state finale in Wamego by finishing in third place with 47 points. Natoma (32) finished second with 30 to qualify. Pike Valley won the team title with 28 points.

Natoma was paced by a sixth-place finish for Joey Raat in 18:45. Pike Valley's Caden Callaway wont the individual crown in 16:03. Victoria's third-place finish was paced by a 13th-place individual finish for Jacy Braun in 19:10. Victoria had four runners -- Braun, Ryan Dreiling, Jacob Stoffel and Taylor Schmidtberger inside the top 20. Qualifying individually from the area were: Brewster's Layton Werth (2nd, 17:52), Stockton's Reed Stephens (4th, 18:30), Quinters' Nicholas Wente (5th, 18:37), Logan's Austin Tein (7th, 18:53), Palco's Taylor Keller (8th, 18:56) and Brewster's Takoda Turner (9th, 18:57).

The host Wheatland-Grinnell girls took top team honors with 24 points and qualified, followed by Downs-Lakeside with 30 and Sharon Springs-Wallace County with 53. Wheatland-Grinnell's Taylor Tustin (16:03) and Lacey Ostmeyer (16:56) were second and third, respectively. Rock Hills' Sarena Meier (16:01) was the individual champ. Also qualifying individually from the area: Hoxie's Madison Niblock (4th, 7;34), Osborne's Camila Faundez (6th, 17:49) and Victoria's Lacey Schmidtberger (7th, 17:54).
