New Salina Diocese bishop to be installed Tuesday

Msgr. Edward Weisenburger will be installed as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Salina on Tuesday in Salina.

The site of his ordination, Sacred Heart Cathedral, holds about 900 people. Nearly 200 priests, archbishops and bishops are expected to attend the ceremony, and because there are more than 80 parishes in the diocese, each parish was allotted five tickets for the ordination.

However, those who didn't get a ticket still will get the chance to participate in some fashion.

Tickets also were available for today's vespers, set for 5 p.m. at the cathedral. And immediately following Tuesday's 2 p.m. ceremony will be a public reception from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.

Also, the ordination will be televised live on EWTN, the Catholic cable television network (Eagle cable channel 44 in the Hays area), and streamlined live on the Salina Diocese's website at

In addition, KVDM-FM in Hays will carry EWTN's audio of the ordination. That can be heard on the radio at 88.1 FM in the Hays area and online at EWTN television will repeat the program at 11 p.m. Tuesday

A Hays priest will have the honors of serving as commentator for the EWTN broadcast.

Fred Gatschet -- pastor of Comeau Catholic Campus Center at Fort Hays State University and a religion teacher at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School -- will explain the rituals of the ceremony as they take place.

Weisenburger will fill a vacancy that has been open since February 2011, when Bishop Paul Coakley was installed as the Archbishop of the Diocese of Oklahoma City. Coincidentally, Weisenburger has served during that time under Coakley as vicar general of the Oklahoma City diocese.
