Block party a way to 'give back'
By KALEY CONNER
Cross Point Hays is planning its first community block party, set for Saturday evening at Hays Municipal Park, located at the intersection of Fourth and Main streets.
Activities -- including live music, a free barbecue, prize raffles and moonwalks -- will be from 5 to 8 p.m.
"It's a way that we can give back to our community, basically with the idea of expecting nothing in return," said Micah Sanderson, venue pastor at the Hays church.
There will be no cover charge for the event.
The Southern Baptist church's worship band will provide live music, and prizes have been donated by dozens of local businesses.
A "junk food walk" also is planned as a fun alternative to the traditional cake walk, he said.
The church, formerly known as Agape Southern Baptist Church, reorganized early this year. Cross Point church now consists of six locations throughout the state of Kansas.
Though in different locations, the venues comprise the same church. All Cross Point locations are organizing events to "give back" to the community, Sanderson said.
The church also serves as a meeting place for Fort Hays State University's Christian Challenge.
