Tornadoes hit Western Kansas

A series of strong storms spawned at least 24 tornadoes on northwest Kansas tonight, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

There were unconfirmed reports of damage in and around WaKeeney, as well as reports of injuries in WaKeeney.

The extent of the damage was uncertain as storms continued to pound the area, prompting a number of tornado warnings. A tornado watch was issued for much of the area through 5 a.m. Friday.

Storms started blowing up around 4 p.m. Thursday, first in far northwest Kansas where there were tornadoes reported in the Bird City area.

As the storm system moved east, it spawned tornadoes along the way.
