Wasinger trades city seat for county

For Hays city commissioner Barbara Wasinger, Thursday's city commission meeting marked the end of one chapter in her public service career. Wasinger, who was elected second district Ellis County commissioner in November, will begin her service with the county in January.

"As a resident of Ellis County, I'm very happy to see her elected on the county commission," said City Manager Toby Dougherty. "On behalf of all our staff, we are sad to see you go and are proud of what you did while you were on the city commission."

Wasinger was recognized by Mayor Troy Hickman and fellow commissioner Ron Mellick for her accomplishments as a city commissioner. Her enthusiasm for the city of Hays was summed up by Mellick.

"It doesn't matter where we go, Barb is promoting Hays," Mellick said. "She always tells everybody she's from Hays. She tells them everything that's great about our city, and we couldn't ask for a better cheerleader than what Barb has been."

State Rep. Eber Phelps, who lost a re-election bid in the state House in November, has been appointed to fill the remainder of Wasinger's term.
