Severe weather in forecast today

The greatest threat of tornadoes today might be in Nebraska and Iowa, but meteorologist Larry Ruthi isn't ruling out the possibility of a twister touching down in the northern reaches of Kansas.

A storm system was setting up for a round of storms later today.

But, he said, it is not as strong as the system that struck northwest Kansas late last week, spinning down tornado after tornado that damaged nearly two dozen homes and injured five people.

Even though the forecast is calling for tornadoes in Iowa and Nebraska, Ruthi said, "I can't rule out the possibility of some tornadoes along the front."

That front could position itself along northern Kansas, perhaps in the Phillips, Norton and Smith county areas. There's also a chance for severe storms in the Trego and Ellis county areas.

"Nothing surprises me this year," Ruthi said of the storm systems.
