Adams only one to file

With less than a month until filing deadline for candidates to be included on August's primary ballot, only one Ellis County Commission candidate has stepped forward.

Ron Adams filed Tuesday for third district commissioner, a position held by Dean Haselhorst.

Adams, a Fort Hays State University graduate and longtime resident of Ellis County, recently retired from the State Fire Marshal Office. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and as a registered land surveyor for Bucher, Willis and Ratliff Engineering.

He said he hopes to contribute to the community as a commissioner. As a retired resident, he said he "can spend extra time and research on decisions needed to be made for the county."

In addition to the third district commission position, open Ellis County positions for 2012 include: second district commissioner, sheriff, county attorney and county treasurer.

County Treasurer Mickey Billinger, who has had the position 37 years, announced he will not run for reelection.

Filing deadline to be included on the Aug. 7 primary ballot is June 1 for party candidates. Independent candidates have until noon Aug. 6 to file.
