HHS soccer advances to tourney title game

By The Hays Daily News

McPHERSON -- The Hays High School girls' soccer team is heading to the championship game of the McPherson Invitational.

The Indians defeated Newton 1-0 on a buzzer-beating goal Thursday.

Hays High senior Taylor Herman scored the goal with 0.5 seconds left. She shot the ball, collected her own rebound on the left side of the box and shot it to the right of the goalkeeper to the far post.

"It was a tough way to lose a game if you're on the other side," said Hays High head coach Chris Michaelis. "They almost had one on us late in the game as well."

The match's crazy finish was just another in a long line of crazy finishes between the two squads.

The Indians (3-0) have played Newton the past four years, and the other three matches were decided in OT.

Hays High won 2-1 last year in double overtime and 1-0 in a single overtime in 2011. But in 2010, Newton tied Hays High 0-0 after two overtimes and won 4-2 on penalty kicks in the third-place match of the McPherson Invitational.

"I knew it would be competitive," Michaelis said. "We played them in the regular season last year, and they returned a number of players from last year."

Indian senior goalkeeper Laura Truman finished with two saves, while Newton's goalkeeper Kelsi Langley had six.

Hays High will face Andover Central in the title game at 6 p.m. Saturday. Andover Central tied Maize South 1-1 after double overtime and won 3-1 in the penalty shootout.
