Indians dominate Hutchinson Invitational

HUTCHINSON -- The Hays High School boys compete about as well on Mondays as they do on Fridays, it seems.

After the Hutchinson Invitational was rescheduled from Friday to Monday, the Hays High boys still dominated the meet. They won with 181 points, more than doubling second-place Wichita Southeast (87.5) and third-place Wichita Northwest (82).

The Hays High girls got fifth with 75.5 points.

Maize won with 150, and Salina Central was second with 120.

Hays High had eight event winners between the boys and girls.

Senior Cade Sharp won the shot put and discus with throws of 55 feet, 4 inches, and 156 feet, 0.25 inches, respectively.

Sophomore Hayden Kreutzer tied his best vault of the season and won the pole vault with a mark of 13-6.

Senior Josh Brungardt won the 3,200-meter run in 1:59.58, and senior Adam Deterding finished first in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.2 seconds.

The boys' 3,200 relay, composed of Brungardt, Landon Munsch, Keith Dryden and Ethan Fort, also won in 8:19.60.

On the other side, junior Wendy Zimmerman took home the only two gold medals for the Hays High girls.

Zimmerman won the triple jump with a mark of 35-9 and took first in the high jump with a mark of 5-2.

Boys' second-place finishes included: Vincent Bailey in the shot put (48-6), Derek Bixenman in the long jump (21-5), Deterding in the high jump (6-4) and 300-meter hurdles (41.2) and the 1,600 relay (3:32.94).

Boys' third-place marks were Bixenman in the triple jump (42-10) and high jump (6-2), Dominique Carrasco in the 110 hurdles (15.4), Alex Delton in the 100 (11.22), Ethan Fort in the 800 (2:04.46) and the 400 relay (43.70).

Sophomore Mattison Schlaefli took home two silvers for the girls in the 100 hurdles (16.50) and 300 hurdles (49.50), and the girls' 3,200 relay finished second in 10:37.68. Sophomore Ashlyn Parrish received the girls' lone bronze in the 100 hurdles in 17.10 seconds.
