By The Hays Daily News

GARDEN CITY -- Senior Preston Weigel highlighted the Hays High School wrestling team's time at the 56th annual Rocky Welton Invitational over the weekend, hosted by Garden City High School.

Weigel defended his No. 1-ranking in Class 5A by pinning his way through the 195-pound bracket, his longest match coming in Saturday's tournament final against Baca County's (CO) Johnny Loflin in 5:27. Weigel went 5-0 en route to the 195-pound title.

Hays High junior Ethan Deterding, No. 3 in 5A at 182 pounds, advanced to the semifinals of his respective bracket before falling via fall in 36 seconds to Ponderosa's (CO) Dylan Gabel. He finished the tournament going 3-1 with two decisions.

The Indians' other ranked wrestler, senior heavyweight Vincent Scott at 285 pounds, won his first two matches in the heavyweight bracket before losing to Garden City's Montana Fuller via fall in 2:39 in the semifinals. He then fell to Pueblo East's (CO) Jacob Robles in the third-place match.

Hays High will return to Garden City on Thursday for a double dual.
