Hays Recreation Commission calendar

General information

The HRC office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Wednesdays, when the office is open until 6 p.m. The HRC phone number is (785) 623-2650.

Hays Aquatic Park

Due to low attendance, the Thursday Late Swims for the rest of the summer have been canceled. The aquatic park will be open normal hours on Thursdays -- from noon to 7 p.m.

Wednesday deadline

Feel the spark

Music will spark fun and joy for children and their adults moving, playing, singing and exploring. Family groups are invited to enroll. Sign-up for one or more sessions. Entry fee: $5 per person. Dates: July 10 and 17. time: 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. Ages: 8 months to 6 years with an adult. Location: HRC.

Glow art

Children will create a variety of projects with glow-in-the-dark materials (paint, markers, crayons and clay). A blacklight area will be available so children will see their creations suddenly glow. Entry fee: $5. Dates: Mondays, July 8 to 22. Time: 9:30 to 10 a.m. Ages: 12 to 24 months with an adult. Location: HRC.

Ballet level II

Ballet II is for those with prior ballet experience. Dancers will continue to learn ballet vocabulary and technique through structured lessons as well as creative movement. Wear a leotard and tights to class or tight fitting clothes. Traditional ballet shoes or socks are preferred. Entry fee: $20. Dates: Mondays and Fridays, July 8 to Aug. 2. Ages: 6 to 8 years (10 to 10:45 a.m.); 10 to 15 years (11 to 11:45 a.m.) Location: HRC.

School's Out

Come out for a day of fun. Each day, we have a full schedule of games, trips, crafts, cooking and trips to Centennial Lanes, mini golf, area parks and Hays Aquatic Park. Entry fee: $10 per session. Next session: July 10, sticky fingers. Time: 1 to 5 p.m. Ages: 6 to 12. Location: HRC.

Going to the fair

Cowboy Boots and Country Roots is the theme for this year's fair. Let's join the fun and create some art projects to be displayed at the fair for all your friends and family to see. Projects will be taken to the fair to be judged and brought back to the office for pick up. Entry fee: $3. Date: July 8. Time: 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Ages: 3 to 5. Location: HRC.

Bowling 4 Beginners

Do you want your child to learn a great lifetime sport? If you do, try bowling. During this beginners class, participants will learn how to find the right ball, learn the correct approach, follow through, how to keep score and much more. On the last day of class, participants will have a chance to demonstrate their skills in a tournament. Dallas Herreman along with Centennial Lanes staff will instruct the lessons. Entry fee: $16. Dates: July 8 to 11. Time: 1 to 2 p.m. Ages: 8 to 14. Location: Centennial Lanes, 2400 Vine.

Kids pizza pizzazz

Forget the frozen stuff. Learn how to make your own simple and absolutely delicious toppings. In this hands-on class, you and a parent will mix up pizza dough, taste test various pizzas made in class, assemble your own pizza ready to bake at home, and leave with dough for two more individual pizzas. Bring a medium mixing bowl and a small pie or cake pan. Entry fee: $20. Date: July 13. Time: 1 to 3 p.m. Ages: 5 and older (parent participation required). Location: Hays High School FACS room.

Tatting

Learn shuttle tatting in this class. You will learn the basics of how to make rings, joining and chains. You will learn how to make a snowflake and do some edging. As part of the fee, each participant will receive a shuttle and thread. Entry fee: $25. Dates: July 9 and 16. Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Ages: 10 and older. Location: HRC.

Tennis lessons

It's never too early to start playing tennis. This three-week program will introduce the young player to the game of tennis. Basic tennis skills, games and fun will fill the weekly lesson. Entry fee: $35 per session. Dates: Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 25. Ages: 8 to 11 (8:30 to 9:30 a.m.); 12 to 14 (9:30 to 10:30 a.m.); 15 to 18 (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) Location: FHSU tennis courts.

Kanine Kollege

Kanine Kollege will provide owners with information on traditional methods of socializing and training the family dog. Exercises taught during the class include heel on leash, sit, come, down and stay. There is a possibility all of the exercises will not be covered depending on the progress of the class. Owners will be shown how to use positive reinforcement techniques to teach and enforce commands. Owners will be expected to work with their dogs between classes. The instructor will provide assistance to help teach owners how to train their dogs, not train the dogs for you. All owners must have vaccination records with them during the class. Entry fee: $25 per dog per session. Next session: Sundays, July 7 to 28. Time: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ages: 16 and older (dogs, 6 months and older). Location: HRC front parking lot. Dogs must be on 4- to 6-foot leash and choke collar.

Meal preparation

Having healthy, delicious meals every evening after long busy days at work can be hectic. Let us help you by creating three made-ahead meals that can be frozen, then cooked at the convenience of your schedule. Entry fee: $20. Date: July 10. Time: 7 to 8 p.m. Ages: 16 and older. Location: HRC.

Pizza

Forget the frozen stuff. It's time to learn how to make your own simple and absolutely delicious pizza. Using convenient overnight dough, we'll learn the tricks for shaping and baking a thin, chewy crust, and get creative with toppings you can't get delivered. In this hands-on class, you will sample the class pizza, and take home a fresh ready-to-bake pie plus dough for six more. Bring a large mixing bowl and a 9-by-13 pan. Entry fee: $25. Date: July 13. Time: 10 a.m. to noon. Ages: 18 and older. Location: HRC.

Special Pops JAM

Music can make a lot of things better. Come JAM with friends at one or more sessions of fun, music-filled activities. Entry fee: $5 per session. Next session: July 11. Time: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Ages: All ages. Location: HRC.

Special Pops Adapted Day Camp

Campers in the Adapted Day Camp will participate in many activities such as movies, bowling, crafts, miniature golf and many other summer time activities. The camps are open to Hays USD 489 Special Education Cooperative students ages 7 to 21. For information, call Gail Wickham at Hays Recreation Commission at (785) 623-2650. Entry fee: $5.
