Hurricanes swimmer competes at all-star event

Hays Hurricanes swimmer Isaac Smith, 10, was selected to represent the Missouri Valley Swim League at the 29th Annual Midwest All-Star Swim Meet.

The meet was Jan. 12-13 in Lawrence. The top swimmers from the Colorado, Iowa, Midwestern, Missouri Valley and South Dakota swim leagues were represented.

Smith was the only swimmer from western Kansas chosen to compete. He made the finals in the 50 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 50 breastroke. He finished second in the 100 breaststroke and 50 breaststroke in 1:21.86 and 35.84 seconds.

Smith is a fifth grader at Wilson Elementary, and he is the son of Brad and Michele Smith. He is coached locally by Hurricanes Head Coach Morgan Hagerman.

Other members of the Hurricanes also competed in their first meets of the season.

On Jan. 12, the Hurricanes posted 25 top-three finishes.

Kallyn DeWitt, 11, was third in the 100 IM in 1:39.75. Megan Flavin, 11, was second in the 100 freestyle in 1:18.64.

Ana Goodlet, 13, was third in the 50 freestyle (34.16), second in the 100 backstroke (1:24.54), second 100 breaststroke (1:45.18), second in the 200 IM (3:12.45) and first in the 100 butterfly (1:34.25).

Mackenzie Hagerman, 8, was third in the 25 freestyle (23.53), third in the 25 breaststroke (30.06) and first in the 100 freestyle (2:04.08).

Amelia Jaeger, 8, had four first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (41.56), 50 backstroke (45.85), 25 breaststroke (26.41) and 25 butterfly (23.59).

Yesenia Maldonado, 11, was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:53.53), and Emilee Pffanenstiel, 12, was second in the 50 backstroke (38.66) and 50 breaststroke (46.51) and first in the 100 IM (1:29.40).

Kyra Polifka-Wilhelm, 13, was second in the 50 freestyle (34.02), second in the 100 freestyle (1:18.32) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:50.57).

Rilee Schwarz, 8, was second in the 50 backstroke (59.87), and Jackson Stanton, 12, finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:35.10).

The mixed 12 and under 200 freestyle relay team of Flavin, Stanton, DeWitt and Pffanenstiel finished second in 1:05.68, and the mixed 12 and under 200 medley relay of Stanton, DeWitt, Flavin and Maldonado took third in 1:28.98.

On Jan. 18-20, the Hurricanes posted 13 top-three finishes at the Presidential Invitational in Wichita.

Abigail Margreiter, 11, took first in the 200 freestyle (2:31.38) and 50 freestyle (30.79).

Smith was third in the 100 IM (1:17.33), first in the 50 breaststroke (36.03), first in the 100 butterfly (1:23.38), second in the 200 freestyle (2:27.60) and first in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.98).

Zachary Smith, 8, was first in the 100 IM (1:39.18), second in the 25 breaststroke (24.84), first in the 25 freestyle (18.14), first in the 25 butterfly (21.58), third in the 50 butterfly (46.14) and third in the 50 freestyle (38.94).
