Legislators take first step in redistricting

Eds: APNewsNow.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Legislators and staff have taken the first step in what could become another battle over redistricting.

On Thursday, the 2009 Redistricting Advisory Group discussed rules for the upcoming redistricting effort.

But the real battle will occur after the 2010 census, which will re-draw boundaries for congressional districts and legislative districts for the 2012 election.

Committee staff members say the state should retain all of its House districts after the census. In past years, there was concern that Kansas' slow population growth could cost it one of its four U.S. House seats.
